Are you tired of paying outrageous baggage fees every time you fly? Airlines rake in billions by charging travelers for checked bags—sometimes $100 or more per round trip! The secret to beating them at their own game? Packing smart with a travel capsule wardrobe that fits in a carry-on.

The $100+ Travel Mistake

Most major airlines charge anywhere from $30 to $60 per checked bag each way. For a family or frequent traveler, that adds up fast. But here’s the truth: You don’t need to check a bag! With a little planning, you can travel for a week (or more) with just a carry-on.

The Secret Weapon: The Capsule Wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is a tightly curated selection of clothing that mixes and matches seamlessly, giving you maximum outfit options with minimal pieces. It’s the ultimate hack for traveling light—and avoiding those sneaky airline fees.

Step 1: Check the Weather

Before starting the packing process, it is crucial to research and understand the weather conditions of your destination. By doing so, you can curate your wardrobe with the appropriate clothing for each day of your trip. Consider the temperature, humidity, and any potential changes in weather patterns to ensure you are prepared for every scenario. CHECK AGAIN 24 HOURS BEFORE DEPARTURE and make adjustments.

Step 2: Review Itineraries

To pack efficiently, review your travel itineraries and make a note of any specific activities or events you will be participating in during your trip. Are you planning on hiking, sightseeing, or attending formal dinners? Understanding the nature of your activities will help you determine the types of outfits you need to include in your capsule wardrobe.

Step 3: Choose a Color Palette

Opting for a cohesive color palette is the secret to maximizing outfit combinations while minimizing the number of items you pack. Select a base color (such as black, navy, or beige) that can be mixed and matched with complementary tones. By sticking to a color scheme, you can effortlessly create stylish and coordinated outfits throughout your journey.

Step 4: Pre-Stage the Outfits

Now that you have an idea of the weather, itinerary, and color palette, it’s time to pre-stage your outfits. Pull out the clothes you plan to bring and create potential combinations. Lay them out on your bed or a flat surface, ensuring each item can be mixed and matched with others. This step allows you to visualize your options and make any necessary adjustments before packing.

Step 5: Try On the Outfits

Trying on the outfits you’ve pre-staged is essential to ensure they fit well, flatter your figure, and make you feel confident. Take note of any items that require alterations or replacements. Remember to consider comfort and versatility when evaluating each outfit, as you want to be prepared for any unexpected adventures that may come your way. Ensure sure your accessories work as well!

Step 6: Pair It Down

Make sure everything fits in your suitcase. I use these compression packing cubes to organize my suitcase…and to compress my sweaters to save space. If everything does NOT fit in your suitcase, pair it down and remove some items.

But if everything fits in the suitcase, you are ready to travel!

Happy Styling!
