Overdressing
- Mistake: Overdressing for a wedding—showing up in attire that’s too formal, like a ballgown or heavily embellished outfit
- Why It’s a Mistake: Takes attention away from the bride and groom and makes YOU feel out of place
- Fix: Unless the invitation says “black tie”, avoid full-length evening gowns or anything that appears red carpet-ready, and contact the host if uncertain.
Underdressing
- Mistake: Wearing an overly casual outfit to a wedding.
- Why It’s a Mistake: It fails to honor the couple’s commitment and can seem dismissive of the occasion. It can also make you feel embarrassed and feel out of place during the event.
- Fix: Read the invite carefully as it will give hints at the dress code, consider the venue, and contact the host if uncertain
Playing It Too Safe
- Mistake: Sticking to only “safe” or dark colors because of age.
- Why It’s a Mistake: It ages you and makes you look older than you are.
- Fix: Summer weddings are the perfect excuse to embrace color, rather than defaulting to black or navy.
Wearing Florals
- Mistake: Wearing floral dresses for women over 50.
- Why It’s a Mistake: Florals look lovely on younger women, but appear matronly and dowdy on mature women
- Fix: Embrace modern solids instead.
Wrong Undergarments
- Mistake: Wearing undergarments that show through your dress, are too hot for the weather…or failing to wear the proper undergarments altogether
- Tip: Wear a proper bra and shapewear, ladies!
O.L.S.: Old Lady Shoes
- Mistake: Wearing shoes that look matronly and dowdy
- Why It’s a Mistake: Wearing shoes that look matronly and dowdy make YOU look matronly and dowdy as well.
- Tip: Wear shoes that are both modern and comfortable
Ignoring Venue and Schedule
- Mistake: Failing to consider setting—for example, stilettos on grass or heavy fabrics at a beach wedding.
- Tip: Match your outfit to the venue. Garden/beach weddings call for wedges or flats and light hues, while hotel venues suit dressier, refined looks.
