Before you buy anything new, take a look at what you already own. Sometimes, the best summer pieces are already in your wardrobe, just waiting to be rediscovered.

1. Ditch Heavy Denim

Mistake: Wearing denim on very hot and humid days.

Why to Avoid: Denim is often too heavy and traps heat, making you uncomfortable.

Better Option: Try lighter alternatives like chambray. If you love the look of denim, seek out lighter-weight fabrics. Breathable natural fibers such as linen, cotton, bamboo, or Tencel are great options airflow and comfort. BUT…don’t discount synthetic fibers as many (not all) are cooling to the touch. If fact, if you are going to be outside in the heat, then natural fibers are YOUR ENEMY (they show sweat stains): synthetic fibers such as DryTech that keep moisture away from the skin are the best option.

2. Wearing Clothing That’s Too Tight

Mistake: Tight, bodycon dresses or tops.

Why to Avoid: These cling to the body, making you feel hotter and more uncomfortable.

Better Option: Embrace oversized fits in the summer. Flowy pieces like A-line skirts, wrap dresses, or tiered dresses offer both comfort and style.

3. Outdated or “Too Young” Styles

Mistake: Choosing styles that look overly juvenile, such as playsuits, rompers, or dresses with excessive frills or large, childish florals.

Why to Avoid: These can feel out of place and may not flatter a mature silhouette. Also, avoid the “Little House on the Prairie” look—long, frilly, shapeless dresses that can appear matronly.

Better Option: Ask yourself, What would Jackie wear? Opt for classic, flattering styles that feel age-appropriate and chic.

4. Wearing Shapewear

Mistake: Relying on shapewear in the heat.

Why to Avoid: Shapewear can cause overheating and discomfort.

Better Option: Choose outfits that don’t require shapewear. If you feel you need Spanx, pick a different outfit.

These images were taken about 3 years ago. When I posted them, my social media accounts EXPLODED. But the truth is that they made for great photos…but these weren’t practical outfits. I can’t wear this to the grocery store. I can’t wear this to pick up my son from school. I certainly can’t wear them to work. And I am wearing WAY TO MANY ACCESSORIES for the heat of summer: all of the metal, belts, shawls, handbags, etc. traps heat in the dog days of summer. As several of you commented on the YouTube video, you noticed my outfits here, rather than me…and that violates the NUMBER ONE RULE of Classic Style.

5. Heavy or Sticky Accessories

Mistake: Wearing heavy jewelry or bulky belts that can stick to your skin or leave imprints in the heat.

Better Option: Opt for lightweight earrings, straw totes, and open sandals with good support.

6. Wrong Color Choices

Mistake: Wearing dark colors.

Why to Avoid: Dark colors trap heat and add to your summer discomfort.

Better Option: Lighter colors reflect heat and keep you cooler.

7. Avoiding Sleeveless Tops

Mistake: Thinking you can’t wear sleeveless tops due to your arms or age.

Better Option: You can show your arms at any age! Many women over 50 rock sleeveless styles—embrace it and stay cool.

8. Heavy Makeup

Mistake: Wearing heavy foundation or bold lipstick in the heat.

Why to Avoid: Makeup can melt or look cakey in hot weather.

Better Option: Keep it light and glowy. Try a moisturizer, tinted sunscreen, a hint of cream blush, brow gel, and lip balm for a fresh summer look.

NOTE: Watch the YouTube video for a more detailed description about my minimal makeup look for hot weather days…and about how too much makeup can make you look old and cake!

A collage featuring a woman with short hair, wearing stylish outfits in three different outdoor settings. Outfits include a light kimono over black pants, a patterned top with shorts, and a navy blazer with white pants. She accessorizes with sunglasses and a handbag, exuding confidence and elegance.
These images were taken about 3 years ago. When I posted them, my social media accounts EXPLODED. But the truth is that they made for great photos…but these weren’t practical outfits. I can’t wear this to the grocery store. I can’t wear this to pick up my son from school. Belts look great for photos…but they aren’t great for the menopause belly. For many of us, wearing a belt over the menopause belly is like pointing a neon arrow at the midsection. And its downright uncomfortable as it traps heat in that area in the summer months. Skip the belts in the summer heat, ladies.

9. Belts

Mistake: Adding belts around the waist.

Why to Avoid: Belts add an extra layer, trap heat, and can accentuate the menopause belly.

Better Option: Choose loose and flowy outfits that allow air to circulate and keep you cool.

Three stylish women over 50 walking outdoors, showcasing different summer outfits. The left features a woman in a black top and white pants with a brown handbag. The middle woman wears a black top with a scarf and black pants, holding a black bag. The right woman is in a pink top paired with white pants, carrying a pink tote.
These photos are three years old, back from when I was trying to define my midlife style. Truth be told, I WAS SWELTERING in each one of these photos. Tucking the shirt in the summer months traps heat around the midsection. It might look great, but YOU will feel miserable, hot, and uncomfortable. Here is your permission slip to leave your shirt untucked.

10. Tucking Your Shirt

Mistake: Tucking in shirts.

Why to Avoid: Tucking adds extra fabric around the waist, trapping heat and making you less comfortable.

Better Option: Wear shirts untucked for better air circulation and a cooler, less restrictive feel.
