But there is a fine line between modern…and matronly…when it come to untucked shirts. Let me offer some guidance!

The outfit on the left features 1) a fitted button up shirt, 2) in a petite length, 3) with the top two buttons open, and 4) fashion tape to hold the neckline open.

The outfit on the right is 1) unfitted, 2) regular length, and 3) only one button open.

MODERN…not Matronly.

PS:  When I was researching this post, I could not find a single post on Google telling women it was okay to wear their shirts untucked.  Let’s change that position!

In Part II of our Styling the Midlife Midsection for Summer series, I told you that sometimes its okay to just wear your shirt untucked.  You don’t have to French tuck, half tuck, quarter tuck, back tuck…or BRA TUCK (*rolling eyes*).  And WOW at the response I received from so many you after making that statement.  Countless women in your community commented that they were relieved to finally hear that it is totally okay to leave their shirt untucked and that the half tuck options only served to accentuate their midlife midsection.  What I heard from you is this:  its okay to sometimes wear the shirt tucked, but overall we don’t want to wear our shirt tucked.  So…let’s UNTUCK IT!

But there is a fine line between modern…and matronly…when it comes to leaving your shirt untucked.  Let me give you some guidance to keep you on the modern side and away from matronly.  None of these rules are hard rules, and they don’t won’t all apply to every situation.  But hopefully these will guide you when wearing your shirt untucked.

1. Get the Right Fit:

A shirt that is too tight could look unflattering while a shirt too loose could look frumpy. Play around with different types of fits (slim, relaxed, etc.) to see what looks best for you.

2. Find the Right Length:

Untucked shirts are where it is especially important for short ladies to buy petite size and tall ladies to buy tall size.

3. Pair Loose with Fitted:

To balance the looseness of the untucked shirt, consider pairing it with a fitted pant (i.e., SKINNY JEANS!) to create balance.

4. Gathered Option:

Another option for wearing an untucked shirt is to gather the hemline with a rubber band to create definition to the waistline.

5. Add FLARE to the Look:

  • Unbutton the top two buttons
  • Roll up the sleeves
  • Wear a camisole or tank underneath.

6. EXCEPTIONS:

As with almost every rule, there is an exception: linen button up shirts and tunics are meant to be worn untucked and unfitted…to create the appearance of easy breezy summer style.
