I live on the water in both of my homes in the Florida Keys and in Northern Michigan. Those of us who live in coastal areas have been dressing in the coastal casual style long before the fashion industry gave it the cringe-worthy name of “Coastal Grandmother” and “Coastal Granddaughter”. So in this post, I am going to guide you through how to dress in the coastal casual style for Spring Fashion 2024.
What *is* coastal casual?
The coastal casual or coastal grandmother fashion style is a relaxed aesthetic that combines elements of classic, timeless fashion with a laid-back, beachy vibe. This style typically incorporates breezy fabrics like linen and cotton, as well as soft, pastel colors and nautical-inspired stripes. Key pieces often include flowy linen pants, cozy cableknit sweaters, comfortable sandals or espadrilles, lightweight cardigans, and nautical-inspired stripes. Accessories like sun hats, beachy jewelry, and straw totes are also common in this style. The color palette includes all of the colors that embody where the sea meets the shore: bright whites, muted blues, soothing sea foam greens, and beige sandy shades. Ultimately, the coastal casual aesthetic is the epitome of effortless style: easy and breezy yet sophisticated, perfect for a walk on the beach, a soothing afternoon sail, or a dockside dinner with family and friends.
How can I dress in the coastal casual style for Spring Fashion 2024?
Overall, the key to achieving the coastal grandmother style is to prioritize comfort, quality, and timeless elegance in every aspect of your wardrobe. Women over 40, women over 50, and women over 60 can embrace the coastal grandmother style for spring fashion in 2024 by opting for comfortable yet stylish pieces that exude a relaxed and effortlessly chic vibe. Loose-fitting tunics in light, breathable fabrics like linen or cotton are perfect for the warmer weather, while pairing them with an oversized cardigan adds a touch of casual sophistication and a bit of warmth. Accessorize with straw market tote bags and oversized sunglasses for a beachy feel. Embrace neutral tones like soft blues, muted greens, and sandy beiges. As always, ditch the prints in favor of solid colors and minimal stripes. (Prints date the look and add age to the wearer.) But make sure you think of this capsule wardrobe as the bare minimum essentials that can be expanded upon specific on your personal needs and lifestyle.
What kind of footwear do I wear for coastal casual for Spring Fashion 2024?
Comfort is ALWAYS key with the coastal casual aesthetic. While the fashion industry and other bloggers (who don’t actually live in coastal areas) want you to believe that sandals and espadrilles are the essential footwear for the coastal grandmother look, *this* coastal grandmother of SIX will tell you that canvas sailing shoes and comfortable rubber-sole loafers are more practical…and more chic. Don’t get me wrong: I love my sandals and espadrilles. But its not generally warm enough in Spring in most coastal locations to wear those shoes. As a seafaring woman at heart (I captain my own boat!), I swear by my canvas sailing shoes and rubber-sole loafers (shown below). These shoe options permit easy strolling along the lakeshore and safe footing on the docks.
I am barely 5’1 with a 26” inseam and generally wear size 4P. All items fit TTS (true to size) unless otherwise stated.

You show the Spanx pants quite often and they look great on you. Do you really find them comfortable? I’ve always been afraid to try them for fear they would be like wearing shapwear. Kinda like torture.
They look great… But they kind of feel like shapewear. I definitely would not call them my comfy pants.
