How to Elevate an Everyday Top Into A Night Out Look

“Going Out” Tops vs. Elevated Everyday Looks: let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

One of our community members recently asked me for suggestions on “going out” tops – those special occasion tops that hang in our closets waiting for a night out. I realized I didn’t have many going out tops anymore.

This question made me examine my mindset around going out attire. As part of my effort to simplify my style and shop my own closet, I’ve changed my thinking. I used to buy specific fancy tops just for nights out. Now, I’ve put those going out tops into storage. (I haven’t gotten rid of them yet – just seeing if I can live without them.). Instead of spending money on various special occasion tops, I elevate basic everyday sweaters or blouses into night out looks. This allows me to get more versatility and cost savings from pieces I already own.

My goal is to see if I can live without designated going out attire by styling my everyday pieces in fresh ways for nights out. This fits with my larger mission to consciously shopping my closet FIRST and simplifying my style…a style that matches my actual lifestyle.

I am barely 5’1 with a 26” inseam and generally wear size 4P. All items fit TTS (true to size) unless otherwise stated.

“Going Out” Tops…or Elevate Everyday Wardrobe Items?

Step 1: Start with an Everyday Top or Sweater

I chose an everyday sweater that I generally wear with jeans or joggers. I picked one that has clean lines and simple style.

Step 2: Swap Out Jeans for a Skirt or Pants

Second, swap out the jeans for a skirt or pants. I chose this velvet midi skirt for warmth as winter is here.

Step 3: Add Boots or Heels

Third, add boots, heels, or nice flats. I chose boots as it is already cold outside and I wanted a warm winter outfit.

Step 4: Experiment with Layers

Fourth, experiment with a layer. I tried a cashmere pashmina here. Although I liked this look (I did not like the outfit with a cashmere poncho), I opted for a different layer instead.
Instead of a cashmere pashmina or poncho, I opted for this warm yet simple Coatigan.

Step 5: Add Minimal Jewelry

Fifth, add minimal jewelry. Overstated jewelry can make you look older a date an outfit. Opt for minimal jewelry instead. I chose a simple pair of cold earrings with modern, clean lines.

Step 6: Add a Designer-Looking Handbag

Finally, add a Designer LOOKING Handbag…plenty of expensive-looking handbags on Amazon for budget prices. And with that last addition, I have elevated a simple everyday sweater to a night out look. Cheers to a fun night out!

Final Thoughts…

I took an everyday clean-line sweater – one that gets a lot of everyday wear – and elevated it to a going out look. In the process, I eliminated the need for tops that are only worn for “going out” (ones that end up hanging in my closet without getting worn), I eliminated the need to spend money on going out tops, and I simplified my style to a look that is actually in line with my lifestyle. Cheers to a fun night out!
