If you mention network marketing at a dinner party, you’ll likely get one of two reactions.
Some people lean in and ask questions.
Others immediately say, “Isn’t that a pyramid scheme?”
The truth is that network marketing is one of the most misunderstood business models in America.
And unfortunately, many women dismiss an opportunity that could genuinely improve their financial situation because they’re operating from outdated information.
Let’s address some of the most common myths.
Myth #1: “Network Marketing Is a Pyramid Scheme”
This is probably the biggest misconception of all.
Pyramid schemes are illegal. They have no legitimate product or service and rely solely on recruiting people into the system.
Network marketing companies sell actual products to actual customers. Revenue is generated through product sales, not simply through recruiting.
If a company doesn’t have customers purchasing products, it doesn’t survive.
End of story.
Myth #2: “Only the People at the Top Make Money”
Many people assume that success depends entirely on getting in early.
But unlike traditional corporate careers, network marketing doesn’t require years of waiting for promotions, raises, or someone else’s approval.
A new person can outperform someone who has been with a company for years simply by serving customers consistently and sharing products effectively.
Success isn’t determined by your start date.
It’s determined by your activity.
Myth #3: “You Have to Harass Your Friends and Family”
This may have been true decades ago.
Today, the most successful network marketers are building communities online through education, storytelling, and value-driven content.
I don’t cold message strangers.
I don’t pressure people.
I don’t chase anyone.
I simply share what I’m using, what I’m learning, and the results I’m experiencing.
People decide whether they want to know more.
That’s a much different approach than the stereotype many people still imagine.
Myth #4: “You Have to Be a Salesperson”
Some of the most successful people in network marketing don’t consider themselves salespeople at all.
They’re teachers.
Coaches.
Problem-solvers.
Community builders.
People buy when they feel understood.
If you’ve ever helped a friend solve a problem, recommended a great restaurant, or shared a product you love, you’ve already done the most important part.
The skill isn’t selling.
The skill is serving.
Myth #5: “The Market Is Saturated”
People say this about every industry.
Real estate.
Insurance.
Fitness coaching.
Content creation.
The reality is that people are drawn to people.
No one can duplicate your personality, your story, your experiences, or your unique ability to connect with others.
There will always be room for someone who genuinely helps people.
Myth #6: “It’s Too Risky”
Let’s flip that question around.
Is relying on a single paycheck risk-free?
Many women learned in recent years that job security can disappear unexpectedly.
Companies restructure.
Contracts end.
Departments are eliminated.
A second stream of income isn’t necessarily risky.
For many families, it’s a form of protection.
Diversification isn’t just for investments.
It’s smart for income, too.
Myth #7: “You Need a Huge Social Media Following”
You don’t need thousands of followers.
You need trust.
A small audience that knows, likes, and trusts you is far more valuable than a massive audience that never engages.
The women I see succeed consistently aren’t influencers.
They’re relatable.
They’re authentic.
And they show up consistently.
The Real Reason Many Women Consider Network Marketing
For most women, it isn’t about becoming rich overnight.
It’s about creating options.
- Options to help with groceries.
- Options to contribute to retirement.
- Options to pay for travel.
- Options to support aging parents.
- Options to reduce financial stress.
- Options to retire on their own terms.
As women enter midlife, many begin asking different questions than they did in their twenties.
- What happens if my spouse loses their job?
- What happens if I want to retire early?
- What happens if I need more flexibility to care for family members?
- What happens if I simply want more choices?
Those questions deserve thoughtful answers.
Why I Chose Bravenly
When I joined Bravenly, I wasn’t looking for another job.
I was looking for options.
As a wellness advocate, NASM Certified Nutrition Coach, and AFPA Certified Gut Health Nutritionist, I already spent much of my time helping women improve their health.
Bravenly gave me a way to share products I genuinely believe in while creating an additional income stream for my family.
What I appreciate most is that I don’t have to become someone I’m not.
- I teach.
- I educate.
- I share.
- I help women solve problems.
The products simply become part of that conversation.
