As the warmer months approach, many midlife women seek a fresh yet effortless style that reflects their confidence and lifestyle. One powerful way to achieve this is by developing your own personal uniform – a go-to outfit formula that feels comfortable, looks great, and simplifies your mornings. We talk about what NOT TO WEAR to avoid looking old and frumpy…and then I give you an actionable plan to find your everyday style for late spring and early summer 2025 for women over 40, women over 50, and women over 60. So let’s get started creating fashionable and chic everyday summer outfits!

THESE ARE MAKING YOU LOOK FRUMPY!

1. Baggy, Oversized, and Shapeless Clothing

Wearing clothing that is OVERLY loose, shapeless, or oversized may feel comfortable but often adds unnecessary bulk and hides your figure, making you appear larger and less put-together. Instead, choose pieces with a tiny bit of structure or subtle tailoring that define your silhouette, such as no tuck tops that are knotted at the waist. These are comfortable and accommodate the menopause tummy while still adding definition to the midsection. OR…consider a styling loose with fitted: a tunic or poet’s blouse with slim fit jeans to add definition to your silhouette.

2. Wearing Too Many Old-Fashioned or Outdated Pieces Together

Combining dated items can make your outfit look much older rather than stylishly vintage. Avoid piling on “grandma-style” elements like cardigans or Bermuda shorts and instead aim for modern, balanced outfits that feel fresh yet age-appropriate.

3. Frumpy Florals and Overwhelming Prints

All-over floral prints that are outdated or overly busy can overwhelm your silhouette and appear matronly. Instead of prints, mix textures to add depth, dimension, and interest to your outfits.

4. Wrinkled, Stained, FADED or Ill-Fitting Clothes

Wearing wrinkled or soiled clothing gives a sloppy, uncared-for impression. Clothes should be well-maintained, clean, and pressed (except for natural linen wrinkles). Proper fit is essential to avoid looking frumpy or sloppy.

What Is a Personal Uniform?

A personal uniform is a combination of clothing you love wearing repeatedly because it makes you feel confident and comfortable. It’s your unique style signature that takes the guesswork out of dressing each day. Think of it as a curated set of outfits that suit your personality and lifestyle, especially perfect for the changing seasons.

Steps to Discover Your Late Spring and Summer Uniform

1. Start with What You Have

For a week, wear your usual outfits and take mirror selfies each day. This helps you see your natural preferences and what feels good on you. Something that you think looks stylish on you!

2. Review Your Choice

After a week, look through your photos to identify patterns. Are you drawn to breezy tops, linen pants, or casual tees? Notice what you wear most and feel best in.

3. Pre-Assemble Your Outfits

Once you spot your favorite outfit types, create 5-6 variations by mixing and matching pieces. Use hangers or clips to prepare these combos in advance, making mornings quicker and easier.

4. Try Your New Uniform

Wear these pre-planned outfits for another week, again taking selfies each day. This trial run helps confirm what works for you in terms of comfort, style, and ease.

5. Evaluate and Adjust

Reflect on how you felt wearing these outfits. Did they simplify your routine? Did you feel confident and comfortable? Adjust your uniform accordingly until it fits your lifestyle perfectly.

What If Your Current Style Doesn’t Excite You?

If your current wardrobe doesn’t inspire you, start fresh by collecting outfit ideas. Save photos from magazines, social media, or Pinterest that resonate with your style aspirations. Look for common themes or outfit formulas in these images, then test those looks using the steps above. Keep refining until you find a style that feels authentic and joyful.

  1. Hi Valerie, I am enjoying your post and recommendations and making a closet discovery. I am curious, where can I find your diet recipes and tips, need to loose weight and I have seen the amazing transformation in you. Loved your white suit at the Google event. Thank you for making clothing life easier including the middle menopause abdomen! 😀

  2. Hi Valarie-
trying to find the link for the really nice beige, short sleeve, collared top in the first picture of this post. Can you provide? Thanks!

      1. I’m getting this message for that link: “Based on your country or location, it isn’t possible to view or shop the products in this collection.” I’m in Colorado.

    1. I love your travel capsule posts and videos. Would you consider doing one for England or Ireland in the summer? I’m 50 and taking my Mom (75) and Aunt (70) this summer for about 12 days, carry on luggage only. They both asked me for packing advice since I’ve been to both countries before, albeit not summer in Ireland. I have thoughts and we do have an AirBnB with laundry halfway through the trip. I just can’t find any capsule wardrobes or decent packing lists for those countries in the middle of summer. I’ve been to London in July a long time ago and wore skirts or cropped pants, short sleeves during the day, and light sweaters in the evening, with a light rain jacket at the ready just in case. I’ve only been to Ireland in the Spring and the Fall but found it more casual than London and otherwise similar in climate. I think you do the most realistic and beautiful travel capsules and I know there is a need for one for this very scenario.

      1. Hi there! In this economy, there aren’t enough people traveling this year for me to justify the expense of putting together any travel capsule wardrobes. Hopefully, that will turn around next year. Have a fabulous trip with your family!

  3. Valarie, I just wanted to send you a big note of thanks for your videos, newsletter, recipes, and most of all your inspiration!

I am a 60 yr old mom of an adult son with special needs. I’m grateful he is high functioning but his career planning and adult transitioning services require a lot of energy and time. Last year in February 2024 I was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic Bile Duct Liver Cancer. It certainly upended my private counseling practice as well as my family’s routine, and all of our lives. I finished 8 months of chemotherapy and I’m on immunotherapy now. I have made very good progress and am doing well. Needless to say, I went into early retirement and my social life and family dynamics have changed.

The most wonderful thing is my style tranformation thanks to you and your educational and fashion inspiring videos. I can’t express enough how much of a difference your videos make. I cleaned my closet out. I am focusing just on the next three months on my new summer style and personal uniform. I feel pulled together and chic when I go out. I have even noticed doctors and health professionals talk to me differently in my new polished and chic look! It feels great to feel like a professional again even in early retirement. It also feels great working on a personal uniform that gives me something to look forward to when I have to go to my many medical appointments and to my son’s transitional meetings.

Focusing on just the next three months on what makes me feel good and put together in the summer season really lifts my mood and makes me feel good about myself after a very trying year.

Thank you again, Valarie! Your work on the fashion social platform medium makes a huge difference! It feels good to look classic, confident, and chic every day!

    1. I think I have read your comment 5 times now. WOW. First, let me send you a big virtual hug for all that you have been through and continue to do. My first set of cases out of law school was advocating for developmentally disabled adults when the government was attempting to cut benefits. I understand that caring for a disabled child is one thing, but caring for a fully grown adult is an entirely different story. Second, hats off to you for taking care of yourself. They teach us early in law school that “they treat you as they see you.” I am so excited for you to continue your personal, fashion, and healing journey this summer! – Valarie
