Watch My Travel Vlog of the Holland, MICHIGAN Tulip Festival Here!
Let’s face it: midlife women love our flowers. Flower gardening brings us happiness. Sitting among our flower gardens brings us peace. And for many of us (like me), flower gardening relieves stress and anxiety. I like to think of it as “Flower Therapy.”
Imagine walking through an ocean of tulips wearing a beautiful dress while gentle breeze envelopes you in the sweet scent of spring blooms as your eyes indulge in vibrant colors that stretch as far as the eye can see. Are you in Holland…or MICHIGAN???
“De Tulpen zijn in bloei!”
DUTCH SAYING

Top Recommendations for Your Tulip Time Experience
1. Explore the Tulip Fields Beyond Downtown
While downtown Holland dazzles with 37,000 tulips in planters and beds near charming shops and restaurants, the real spectacle lies in expansive fields such as Window on the Waterfront Park and Windmill Island Gardens. Here, you’ll find over 125,000 tulips planted alongside an authentic 250-year-old Dutch windmill you can climb inside. The gardens offer peaceful walking paths and photo opportunities perfect for capturing memories.

4. Embrace Dutch Traditions and Festivities
The festival is rich with Dutch cultural experiences that resonate deeply with women who appreciate heritage and community. Watch or join the Klompen Dancers as they perform traditional clog dances in colorful costumes. Visit the Dutch marketplace to sample stroopwafels and shop for wooden shoes and Delftware pottery. For a bit of fun and nostalgia, enjoy the carnival rides and games, or simply relax on the bleachers while soaking in the festive atmosphere.
FOR THE KIDS AND GRANDKIDS: Nelis’ Amusement Park is just north of downtown and is a charming Dutch-themed amusement park with rides for the little kids. I want to take my grandchildren as I think they would love it.

6. Plan Your Visit for Peak Bloom and Comfort
Tulip Time runs from May 2-11, 2025, coinciding with the tulips’ peak bloom period, typically mid-April to mid-May. To avoid crowds and enjoy the flowers at a leisurely pace, a local advised me to consider visiting early in the festival or even 2-3 days before the festival, as some gardens open ahead of time. Comfortable shoes are a must for walking through gardens, parks, and downtown streets. ARRIVE AT WINDMILL ISLAND WHEN IT OPENS AS THE PARKING FILLS UP QUICKLY AND THE PARK GETS CROWDED…like ants at a picnic crowded.

7. Get OFF the Beaten Path
A local directed me north of town to a tulip farm called Veldeer Tulip Farm. It did not have the manicured botanical-garden-like setting of Windmill Island…but it didn’t have the crowds either. If all you want to see is an ocean of tulips, Veldeer Tulip Farm might be the place to go. The wind kicked up and the temperature started to drop, so I didn’t stay long. But it was definitely worth the 10 minute drive from downtown Holland.

Final Thoughts: Why This Festival Speaks to Women in Every Season of Life
The Holland Tulip Festival is more than a floral display-it is a celebration of heritage, culture, and the joy of spring that welcomes women over 40, 50, and 60 to experience beauty, community, and new adventures. Whether you come to stroll through endless tulip fields, learn Dutch dance steps, or simply breathe in the fresh air surrounded by color, Tulip Time offers a refreshing and enriching escape that honors the past while blooming vibrantly into the present.
So pack your camera, your walking shoes, and your spirit of adventure – Holland, Michigan’s Tulip Festival awaits with open arms and a bouquet of unforgettable memories. Don’t just see the tulips – live the experience.
Bon Voyage!
