Spring Event Outfit Guide for GenX Moms & Midlife Grandmothers
Believe it or not, I am both a mother of a high schooler…and a grandmother of six. Yup, we are a modern family here with 22 years from oldest to youngest child. This means that we have a flurry of end-of-school-year Spring events involving our high school son and young grandchildren. These events include volleyball games, softball games, baseball games, teacher appreciation events, music recitals, awards events, and other school events. This is on top of the usual Spring special events such as Mother’s Day, Kentucky Derby, bridal showers, baby showers, etc…and I am going to need an outfit for each and every one.
As mothers and grandmothers, we have worked hard to raise our children to the best of our ability. We deserve to look fabulous at every event and in every photo op. For Gen X moms and midlife grandmothers, each event deserves its own standout outfit that balances style, comfort, and confidence. But because we’ve worked hard, I’ll be darned if I’m going to shell out money on a new outfit for every event.
Don’t worry, Beautiful. I’ve got your back. The key is to shop your closet for versatile, elevated pieces that can be mixed, matched, and accessorized for every occasion.
Shop Your Closet FIRST!
At MidlifePoshCloset.com, our motto is always SHOP YOUR CLOSET FIRST, then supplement your wardrobe when needed. When you are getting inspired by these outfits for each Spring Special event, ask yourself these questions:
- Can I recreate this outfit from items in my own closet?
- Do I have at least one item from this outfit in my existing closet?
- Can I partially recreate this outfit from existing items in my closet? And if I supplement my wardrobe with a piece or two, will I be able to complete the outfit?
- OR…do I need to supplement my existing wardrobe for this event?
Event-by-Event Outfit Inspiration
Mother’s Day Brunch
- Go-To Looks: Pastel dress, shirt dress, pastel suit, shite dress, maxi dress, etc. Soft pastels and vibrant whites are perfect for the season, offering a fresh, feminine, and romantic look.
- Details: Add a light cardigan or pashmina for warmth and a touch of elegance. Ballet flats or low block heels keep you comfortable yet stylish.

Kentucky Derby Party
- PRO TIP: Wear a solid color dress – SKIP THE PRINTS – so that you can go BIG with your Derby Hat and let the hat be the star of the show! Also, remember Martha Stewart’s outfit for the 2024 Kentucky Derby? She wore a solid-colored mauve silk pants suit…and stole the show!
- Details: Pair with wedges or dressy sandals, and add a lightweight trench or blazer if it’s breezy.
School Awards Ceremonies & Recitals
- Go-To Looks: Midi dress (think eyelet or subtle floral), tailored pants with a blouse, or a skirt with a structured blazer. Business casual is the sweet spot-dressy but not overdone.
- Details: Choose comfortable shoes for walking and standing, and opt for longer hemlines if you’ll be on stage or in front of an audience.

Teacher Appreciation & Year-End School Events
- Go-To Looks: Pastel dresses or wide-leg pants with a no tuck top for comfort. Embrace the colors of the season: ballet pink, robin egg blue, soft sage, dove gray, etc. See my YouTube Video on Spring Color Combinations!
- Details: Layer with a denim jacket or cardigan for classrooms that run cool – see my post on the Third Piece Hack to take your outfits from “just okay” to “absolutely FABULOUS!”

Dance & Music Recitals
- Go-To Looks: Elegant midi dress, flowy skirt with a Dolman sweater, or even a satin pants. If you’re helping backstage, opt for a stylish yet practical look-think black pants and a pretty no tuck top.
- Details: Ballet flats or low heels will keep you comfortable through long performances.

Kids’ Sporting Events
- Go-To Looks: You will never…EVER…see Bermuda shorts on this blog. I find them flattering on NO ONE. Instead, I favor shorts. I am 5’0 so I wear a 14’ to 16” short. For my son’s volleyball games and our grandchildren’s sporting events, I either wear a skort or joggers. I can’t keep up with the grandkids team colors, so I tend to wear beige neutrals. For my son’s games, I wear our team colors of navy and red. As always, I wear comfortable athletic sneakers in case I need to help chase balls!
- Details: Sneakers, a crossbody bag, and a sunhat if we are outdoors…no baseball hats here!

Beige Skort “16 + Beige Muscle Tank (Color is “Abalone Grey”) + Baby Blue Muscle Tank (Color is “Snowfall Blue”) + Black Dolman Top + Beige Joggers + Beige Ankle Pants + Brown Ankle Pants (color is “Pyrite”) + Tank Dress + Pearl Slip On Sneakers + Brown Slide Sandals + Beige Shell Jacket + Crossbody Camera Bag + Pashmina (similar)
