Hello Gorgeous!

Perhaps the only fashion lesson I learned from my mother (who had zero cares about fashion), was how to wear a button up shirt instead of a cardigan or jacket in summer.  She didn’t like to show her arms, so she would wear a tank top with an unbuttoned Oxford-style shirt over it.  This ensemble provided lightweight coverage of her arms while still allowing air to flow around the skin. So as we transition from spring to summer, it can often be a challenge to find the perfect balance between staying comfortable in the warmer weather while still looking stylish. One versatile piece that can help bridge the gap between these two seasons is the classic button-up shirt.

For midlife women, the button-up shirt can be a great way to add a touch of sophistication to your summer wardrobe while also providing some extra coverage on those cooler spring days. One creative way to incorporate this wardrobe staple into your summer outfits is to wear it as a cardigan.

How Do I Wear a Button-Up Shirt as a Cardigan?

To achieve this look, simply unbutton your shirt and wear it open over a tank top or sleeveless dress. This creates a chic and effortless layered look that is perfect for those days when the temperature fluctuates.

What Fabrics Should I Choose?

When it comes to choosing a button-up shirt to wear as a cardigan, opt for lightweight and breathable fabrics like cotton or linen to keep you cool in the summer heat. You can also play with different colors and patterns to add some personality to your outfit.

Linen is a wonderful fabric choice for summer due to its lightweight and breathable nature. If you’re looking to transition from spring to summer fashion using a linen button-up shirt instead of a traditional cardigan, here are some styling tips to help you rock this versatile piece:

1. Layering:

Try layering a button-up shirt over a simple tank top or camisole. Leave the shirt unbuttoned for a casual and effortless look that will keep you cool in the summer heat.

2. Tie It Up:

Another fun way to style your button-up shirt is to tie it at the waist. This adds a touch of femininity to your outfit and creates a flattering silhouette. Pair it with high-waisted jeans or a skirt for a chic and stylish look.

3. Add Some Flare:

Another fun way to wear your button-up shirt as a cardigan is to roll up the sleeves and pop the collar for a more casual and laid-back vibe. Pair it with some denim shorts and sandals for a relaxed summer look that is both comfortable and stylish.

3. Roll Up the Sleeves:

For a more relaxed and laid-back vibe, roll up the sleeves of your linen button-up shirt. This will give your outfit a casual and effortless feel, perfect for those warm summer days.

4. Experiment with Textures:

Add some depth and interest to your outfit by experimenting with textures.  Try a denim or chambray button-up shirt instead of a denim jacket.  Experiment with a breezy linen button up shirt to an air of effortless style to you look.

Linen button-up shirts come in a variety of colors, so don’t be afraid to experiment with different hues. Opt for lighter shades like white, beige, or pastels for a fresh and summery look.
