Hello Gorgeous!

One of the things I hear most from midlife women is that they want to look fashionable without looking like they are trying too hard.  With this in mind, we are starting a new series called, “Simplify My Style”.  In Part II, we discuss how you can use textures to add depth and interest to outfits…without using PRINTS…in order to achieve classic, effortless style. Read on if you are a women over 40, women over 50, women over 60, women over 70, or women over 80!

Let me be clear: you do NOT NEED PRINTS to add interest to an outfit.

Instead, incorporate textures to add depth, dimension, and interest to your outfits.

Mixing Textures:

One of the easiest ways to add depth, dimension, and interest to a neutral outfit is by mixing and matching different textures. For example, pairing a chunky knit sweater with a sleek satin slip skirt creates a beautiful contrast that is visually appealing. The softness of the knit against the toughness of the slip skirt creates a dynamic and interesting look that is sure to turn heads.

Layering Textures:

Another way to play with textures is by layering different fabrics. Try layering a silky camisole under a structured blazer or a faux fur vest over a simple tee. This not only adds dimension to your outfit but also creates a luxurious and rich feel. Plus, layering is a great way to stay warm and cozy during the colder months.

Adding Texture with Accessories:

Accessories are also a great way to incorporate textures into your outfit. Adding a pieces like a textured Seagrass tote or a pair of cork kitten heels can instantly elevate your look and make it more visually interesting. As always, keep accessories to a minimum and choose them thoughtfully.  More on this soon!

Linen – Slightly Rough Texture:

Now let’s talk about different types of textures in fashion fabrics! Linen fabric is known for its unique texture that sets it apart from other fabrics. It is made from the fibers of the flax plant, which gives it a natural and earthy feel. The texture of linen can be described as crisp, cool, and slightly rough to the touch. It has a slightly grainy texture that adds to its rustic and organic charm.

One of the key characteristics of linen fabric is its breathability. The open weave of linen allows air to flow through, making it a perfect choice for warm weather clothing. The texture of linen also softens with each wash, becoming softer and more comfortable over time. It has a natural luster and a slightly slubby appearance, adding to its casual and relaxed vibe.

Linen fabric is also known for its durability and strength. Despite its slightly rough texture, linen is a strong and sturdy fabric that can withstand regular wear and tear. It is also highly absorbent, making it a great choice for summer clothing as it wicks away moisture and dries quickly.

Denim – RUGGED Texture:

Denim fabric is a versatile and durable textile that has become a staple in fashion and everyday wear. Made from cotton fibers that are woven in a twill pattern, denim is known for its sturdy and rugged texture. The fabric is typically woven with a colored warp and a white weft, resulting in its iconic blue hue. Denim has a slightly rough and firm texture, giving it a structured feel that softens over time with wear and washing. Its durability makes it ideal for jeans, jackets, and other casual clothing items that require a fabric that can withstand everyday use. The versatility of denim fabric allows it to be dressed up or down, making it a timeless and classic choice for a wide range of fashion styles.

Cotton – SOFT Texture:

Cotton fabric is beloved for its soft, breathable, and comfortable texture. As a natural fiber derived from the cotton plant, cotton fabric has a smooth and gentle feel against the skin. It is known for its versatility, as it can be woven into a variety of textures ranging from crisp and lightweight to soft and plush. The texture of cotton fabric can vary depending on the weave and finish, with options such as jersey, twill, satin, and more. Cotton is highly absorbent, making it a popular choice for clothing items that need to be breathable and moisture-wicking. Its natural stretch and draping qualities add to its comfort and ease of wear, making it a go-to fabric for a wide range of garments from t-shirts and dresses to bedding and linens. Overall, the texture of cotton fabric is soft, smooth, and inviting, making it a favorite choice for both fashion and home textiles.

Summing It Up…

Overall, playing with textures is a fun and creative way to add depth and dimension to a new neutral outfit. So next time you’re putting together a look, don’t be afraid to mix and match different fabrics and materials to create a stylish and visually appealing ensemble. Your outfit will thank you!
