Hi Beautiful!

Yesterday, I posted 3 Steps to Reset Your Wardrobe for Spring.  But Step #1 threw some people for a loop: remove the prints from your closet.  So let me explain.  Here are 4 reasons to midlife women should say NO to prints:

Baby Blue Linen Button Up + White Linen Joggers (similar here) + Canvas Sailing Sneakers

1. Prints age the wearer.

This is me giving you tough love: prints are making you look older.  Why? There are at least two retailers that cater to women over 50, women over 60, women over 70, and women over 80 that sell a lot of prints…big, LOUD prints.  Unfortunately, wearing prints are associated with those retailers and cause people to perceive the person wearing prints as older…and matronly

2. Prints date the outfit.

Prints tend to come and go with the fashion trends.  So when you look back at photos of yourself in 10 years or 20 years, you will quickly identify in your mind when that print was in style.  Remember paisley from the late 1980’s and early 1990’s??? Geometric prints from the early-to-mid 1980’s???If you think you can’t live without prints, give it a try for a month. You don’t have to throw anything out, but just take the prints out of your closet and store them in a box.  If you genuinely miss them at the end of a month, take them back out again.  But if you find you can live without them, its time to donate them.

3. Print are memorable.

Prints are easily recognizable and memorable so you can only wear them 2-3 times before someone comments, “Oh I remember when you wore that outfit before…”

4. Prints are harder to style.

I advocate for a classic wardrobe that can be worn year after year consisting of timeless pieces that can be mixed and matched almost endlessly.  Prints don’t mix and match endlessly which makes them harder to style.

5. Stripes are NOT Prints.

I don’t consider a small stripe like a pinstripe or Breton stripe to be a print.  These are classic styles that have stood the test of time and don’t come and go at the whim and caprice of the fashion industry trends. Here are three examples of timeless, classic stripes:

Example A: Jackie Kennedy Wearing a classic striped tee.
Stripe Tee + Neutral Linen Pants
Example B: Audrey Hepburn wearing a classic boatneck maritime striped top.
Navy Boatneck Maritime Top + Neutral Wide Leg Crop Pants + Wedge Kitten Heels
Example C: James Dean wearing a classic Breton striped sweater.

Around here, our goal is to create a classic and timeless wardrobe for women over 40, women over 50, women over 60, women over 70, AND women over 80…starting with what is already hanging in our closet.  For these reasons, prints simply don’t fit into that mission.
