Today, I start a new series of blog posts, Travel Tuesdays, in which I share with you some of my favorite destinations…along with a few tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way.
It’s Fat Tuesday. I want to share my love for New Orleans with you. 💜⚜️💛⚜️💚
The Big Easy is my favorite 3-day / 4-day trip on the planet. While some people drink their way through the French Quarter, I *eat* my way through the city. Crawfish étouffée, alligator gumbo, shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles, oyster oysters and more oysters. New Orleans, I crave the taste of you on my lips.
These photos are from January 2020. I was so glad we took this trip…because we had no idea what was coming. We were only starting to hear the first reports of this virus popping up on the west coast. As hard as it is for me to leave New Orleans, I had no idea it would be more than three years before I came back. 😢
After all the Mardi Gras festivities here in the Florida Keys over the weekend, my husband and I decided it’s time.
New Orleans, I crave the taste of you on my lips. I’ll be seeing you again soon. 💜⚜️
xoxo, Valarie

Leaving the Big Easy is always difficult. I always wish I had just one more day …my soul always yearns for another night there. A mixture of savory food and soul moving music, there is no other city in the world with the ambiance of New Orleans.

But visits to New Orleans can’t just be about the food. It can’t just be about the music or the culture. Trips to the Big Easy must include all three.
With that said, my favorite way to savor New Orleans is to go to a restaurant or bar, order their signature cocktail, share an appetizer, and listen to the band. Then go to the next stop and do the same, over and over and over until my soul is satisfied.

Every establishment in New Orleans has a signature cocktail. And almost every establishment has a signature appetizer. (Just ask the wait staff for recommendations.) And no two music acts in NOLA sound the same. Ever.

My recommendations?
Start at the first establishment near the corner of Bourbon Street and Canal Street: Redfish Grille. Order the alligator sausage gumbo…and a glass of wine. Redfish Grille has an impressive wine list.

Don’t even think about sharing this Alligator Sausage Gumbo with anyone else…you will want to keep this Redfish Grill specialty all to yourself.

Next, proceed a couple of doors down to the Bourbon Street Drinkery. Always a good musical act there.

Then venture off of Bourbon Street and explore. (Don’t venture too far off Bourbon Street – safety first.) The Royal House is sure to have a fabulous band, mouth-watering oysters…and a tempting cocktail.
But after that, allow your soul (and your ears) to draw you to the next spot. No plan. No agenda. Fly by the seat of your pants. Allow the Spirit of New Orleans to guide you to where you should go.
